Upland Landscape Project:

Back to Nature

This project in Upland showcases a dramatic transformation from a water-intensive Bermuda grass lawn to a beautiful, natural chaparral landscape. More than 1,500 square feet of grass were removed to make way for a sustainable design inspired by nature.

To evoke a sense of the outdoors, berms were carefully sculpted throughout the yard, creating subtle elevation changes and a more organic feel. Boulders and rocks were strategically placed to enhance the landscape’s natural aesthetic and provide visual interest.

A dry creek bed featuring locally sourced boulders serves as a central element, guiding the eye through the space and contributing to the overall natural look. An expansive walkway made from extra-large slabs of Arizona flagstone, set in decomposed granite, connects the various areas of the yard and invites exploration.

Strategic landscape lighting highlights key architectural and plant features, creating exceptional curb appeal while ensuring the space is inviting after dark. This low-maintenance landscape dramatically reduces both water consumption and ongoing maintenance requirements.

Native Toyon and Redbud trees were selected to create privacy, provide cover, and offer forage for local bird populations. These trees contribute to a balanced ecosystem and help attract wildlife to the garden.

A water feature tucked away in an unexpected spot adds a delightful surprise for visitors, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere and providing a focal point in the landscape.
