If you’ve been on the fence about replacing your thirsty, high maintenance lawn with drought tolerant plants, this might be what it takes to get you to make the switch!
SoCal Water$mart, a program through the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, offers a $2 per square foot rebate for removing grass, and $100 per 15-gallon tree. This rebate is available to residents from Simi Valley down to San Diego. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8d/Metropolitan_Water_Districts_Member_Agencies_Map.jpg
Some of the requirements for the rebate are:
At least 250 square feet of turf must be replaced. This can be a front lawn, a back yard area or parkway strip. However, if the total amount of all the lawn area at the property is less than 250 square feet, you can qualify by removing all of your turf.
Turf has to be replaced by 3 plants per 100 feet. Existing trees that will remain count as plants towards this total.
A rainwater retention feature has to be incorporated in the landscape. This can be a dry creek, a berm or swale, or a rain or rock garden. More on these features here https://socalwatersmart.com/en/residential/rebates/available-rebates/turf-replacement-program/sustainable-approach/
The new landscape can be irrigated in a few ways. Drip irrigation, micro-spray, bubblers, or high efficiency rotating nozzles. The old-fashioned approach of capping the irrigation lines and hand watering is also allowed.
